  • I want my California grandson to visit me in Michigan during the summer.  He is 8 years old and wears a pump, but has low numbers at night.  What should I know and do so that he has fun on his vacation with me?

  • Well, what I would do is make sure to give him a 15-20 carb snack before bed maybe that would help prevent a low blood sugar during the middle of the night. Just make sure you always have fast acting glucose or juice on hand at all times just in case of a low during the day and if you are going on long trips make sure you have extra supplies with you too.

  • My daughter also tests low at night, and she is not yet on the pump. It is true to give the child a 15 to 20 carb snack, but remember to give something that will fill up the stomach. I usually give my daughter a protein snack along with the carb snack. That usually will hold her through the night. However, I do get up in the middle of the night and check her just incase she runs low.
