Guess I'm wondering if there are any other Type 1 moms (not to be confused with Moms of Type 1s). I was diagnosed when I was five, back in 1982. I started out with the shots and in 1995, just before college transitioned to an insulin pump. I've been on one or another pump ever since. Almost a year ago, I had my daughter. So far she's doing awesome inspite of my condition and her coming 10 weeks early (another topic).
Right now I'm considering starting clinical trials again. I was part of a couple of these back when I was in grade school and college. Now that I'm not working and in school again, I figure it might be a good time, if there are any clinical trials for diabetics like me.
I'm also looking for a new endocrinologist, since my previous one decided to retire early and focus strictly on research. I'm really dreading this, because its been hard finding doctors who don't treat me like I'm an idiot or a child. I'd think 27 years with no complications AND a healthy baby might indicate that I take care of myself.
Other than that, my big challenge right now is taking care of my diabetes while taking care of my daughter. When people say parenthood is an exhausting experience, they do not exaggerate!
Thanks for reading, looking forward to giving some feedback here and making some friends.

Oh, and my big hobby is muscle cars and autosports. Fun for me is a day on the big track at Willow Springs in my V8 Charger. :)
Well, over a year later and my daughter's terrible twos are kicking my butt. I've decided since I'm at the point where I have to hide my bad eating habits and food preferences from her (She wants everything I'm eating), that I may as well just make the effort to give them up. So this summer I'm planning to really really quit diet soda, exercise more and eat better.
Found a new endocrinologist but its weird because she's a year and a half younger than me AND she's on a "preventative measures" kick. So because my LDL was looking a little high (all other numbers were at or better than perfect!) she put me on a statin. Gotta say its really messing with my digestion and making me generally miserable.
Last fall she found a large nodule in my left thyroid and biopsied it in April after we decided to it needed closer inspection. Its benign but oddly huge for someone my age with no thyroid issues. Since the biopsy though I'm noticing weird nerve issues. My left fingers like to cramp up or randomly go numb and I have a new persistent numb spot on my left big toe with no associated injury or trauma. This after years of no nerve issues or numbness/tingling. So I'm going to ask about that when I see her in a month, if not sooner. Whee...
Hi Tamara! I'm sorry no one has responded sooner. I've the proud Mommy to a 26 month old son (born April, 2009). It sounds like our kids are close in age? I found the first year and a half really, really hard to deal with my diabetes and dealing with a baby. Luckily, he's more independent now, so I can focus on my needs more. I found *** feeding really hard b/c it gave me crazy lows, but at unexpected times. Since weaning him a year ago, and going on a CGM a few months ago, I'm getting better about having fewer lows, but now, of course, dealing with highs. :P Oh well, my a1c's are averaging out well.
Are you thinking about having any more kids? I got a second auto-immune disease (of the skin) a year after my pregnancy, so I'm worried about taking the risk of a 2nd pregnancy. I guess the hormonal changes can trigger these diseases. But, we are considering it and talking to some specialists. We'd probably wait until our son is older anyways b/c of the intense work in a diabetic pregnancy. Of course, I only have 2 1/2 more years only I hit the "magic" 35 and everything is even more high risk. (:
Have you looked at the Juvenation forums? You may meet more people there b/c some of these groups tend to be slow.

Yes, Madeline was born in April 2008. I'd like to have another baby, but money is too tight and my husband's job situation is too tenuous. I'm not working so I can finish school and take care of her and that's a lot to handle as is. Once I'm done with school in a year, I'll need to start looking for work if I can find it, to pay off student loans. And I'm turning 34 in November. So all signs point to no more children. *sigh*
My daughter was born ten weeks premature because of a dwindling placenta (bad embryo implant, so she never had a full sized placenta to work with), one of those random things that usually result in a miscarriage. Well, because of that and my being diabetic, my next pregnancy will probably mean a lot of bed-rest and testing and monitoring so there's no real way I could work and considering our current insurance is high-deductible, and my husband took a 10% paycut to get a new job after being laid off, its just not looking good.
Anyway, I'm happy that I have one beautiful miracle baby, terrible twos and all. And she's a major reason I'm trying to take care of myself and manage my diabetes better. And I'm trying to figure out how this works, its not exactly like other forums I frequent. :)
