  • Hi Everyone,

I'm Marlee and i've been Diabetic since I was 5. There are a few other diabetics at my college but I would love to get to know more. I love to help people and give advice so if any newly diagnosed people need someone to talk to or have any questions please feel free to ask me. I've been a pumper for 9 years so I know a good deal about that. Also, I would love to here any info about symlin. I know it's mostly used for type 2 but I know a few type ones who have had great success with it and would like to talk my dr. into letting me try it during my winter break which is fast approaching. Well thats all for now.

    Marlee

  • Marlee,

Welcome aboard!!! :)  I'm newer to the pump and look forward to your insights!  I am also hoping to try Symilin, however, I am wondering if the hypoglycemia unawareness will cross me off the list.  In my case, I'm just hoping to have it help me drop a couple o' pounds...  I've heard you can't mix it with the insulin which means going back on shots - which (for me) means I will probably not push the issue too hard - keep us posted on what you find out and your results!

    Cheers,

    A-D

  • Hi Marlee:

I've been T1 for a while but a new pumper.  I was on Symlin not too long before going on the pump.  It will mean extra shots.  You take it when you eat like the regular shot.  (It meant up to 8 shots a day for me at the time). It SERIOUSLY curbs appetite so if weight is a concern you will most likely lose weight.  I have not been on Symlin since starting the pump and the idea of shots again is not a great one for me.  It's not a bad option just do some research.

  • Thanks for the input. I have a few friends who are on symlin so I have a good idea of what it involves in terms of the shots. For me it is mostly a weight/ portion control issue and i've really tried everything. It's very easy for me to over eat since I'm in college (aka my mom doesn't stand guard in front of the pantry) and especially because I'm actually hungry all the time. It takes ALOT of food for me to feel satisfied and i really believe that this is a diabetes related issue.

  • Marlee,

I've always eaten really silly amounts of food - I'd never paired it to the diabetes and until recent years, it wasn't such a big deal because I was so active but the more time I spend working in one chair all day... *YIKES* - I wonder if there are a large group of us with unusually sized appetites...

Definitely keep us posted as you go!

    Cheers,

    A-D

  • The few people I know who were recently diagnosed and also in their 20's and 30's noticed huge appetite increases along with weight gain following diagnosis and after settling back into their normal routines. Also I have noticed that most diabetics I talk to who are unhappy with their weight have a harder time keeping the weight of than most people.
