  • Hi,

    My son who is 8 was dx'd w/ type 1 diabetes Jan/2011

He also has severe autism and is non-verbal,and has other special needs.

My older son who is 18 was dx'd w/type 1 when he was 8 as well, but it is ALOT different having a child w/significant disabilities  on top of it.

Any other parents have a child w/ type 1 and special needs?

  • caandahl -

There are a couple of very good parent groups here and a lot of folks with a broad array of experiences and training... and lots of folks like me who, while we won't likely have any answers can do a good job listening and rooting for you.

    Welcome aboard!

    Cheers!

  • Like A-D, many of us most likely wont have answers for many of your questions - but many of us are stil here to listen!  I am a special education teacher and worked with many students on the severe end of the autism spectrum who were non-verbal.  I mostly work with students with learning disabilities now, but I still have some frame of reference for what you might be going through.

  • Welcome to Juvenation! It sounds like you have a lot of your plate.

I haven't heard of anyone else on here going through the same thing -- the kids with T1 and adhd, etc are totally different if they're verbal... My only thought was some parents of very young kids with t1 might have some advice about dealing with highs/lows with children who aren't expressing their needs or caring for themselves.

Does your son use a device or other means for purposeful communication, or is he not using purposeful communication? Also, does he have any feeding needs that impact BG control? (I also work with kids who are on the spectrum, I'm an SLP...)

Send me a message even if you just want to vent!!

    Sarah ~ T1 since age 4
