Last Sunday I met Anna Gerber, the Ride to Cure Diabetes coach in San Diego and a few really fantastic individuals who will be doing the Ride in Tucson with me the weekend of November 18-21. Anna really knows her stuff when it comes to training for the Ride. She works with all levels of riders and helps to get them to reach their goal of completing 30, 62 or 100 miles in Tucson. One of the riders in our group on Sunday Chris Kasper, completed 109 miles in Tucson last year. Way to go ! He rode for his 10 year old daughter who is coping with type 1 diabetes since she was 5.
If you have a loved one with type 1 diabetes then you have the inspiration enough to do the ride. If you don't have as strong a connection to type 1 all you have to do is listen to the stories of the riders who have a child with type 1 and know that this is a very special event in which to participate. We are looking to expand the program here in San Diego and need more adventurous people who would like to train together for this ride.
The JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes is an event of a lifetime ! Riders from around the world take on two challenges: raising the critical money needed to fund research that will cure diabetes and reaching a personal training goal that will prepare them for their destination cycling experience. Participants spend the weeks before the Ride working with a USA cycling certified coach and a JDRF fundraising coach to help them reach their goals. It would be great if you could be part of the team that moves JDRF towards a cure with every mile pedaled and every dollar raised.
The destinations of the Ride are designed for riders of all fitness levels. As you pedal toward your goal of 30, 62 or 100 miles you will be amazed by our country's natural landscapes. Each destination promises its own beauty and challenges, and will help to create memories that will remain with you long after you return home.
The locations of this year's Rides are:
Burlington, VT - July 15-18
La Crosse, WI - August 12-15
Lake Tahoe, NV - September 10-13
Death Valley, CA - October 14-17 (This is full. No longer accepting any more riders)
Tuscon, AZ - November 18-21
Refer to www.ride.jdrf.org for information about the different levels of fundraising to get an idea of the kind of money that you would need to raise. If you would like to participate in this, please let me know. I will put you in touch with the fundraising coach, Janette Wilke and the cycling coach, Anna Gerber.
Help us get a large team where everyone is fired up and raring to go !
Thanks, Claudette
