Right now I'm sick. I have strep throat and bronictis and my blood sugars have been extremely high like higher than I have ever been ( 541, 539, 510, 536 ). My parents have always said that your blood sugar goes up when your sick, but its never happened to me before. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be that high. I haven't even been over 500 since I was little. Do you guys get that high to because like i said i dont know I haven't ever been effected like this before. Maybe its nothing but its scarying me.
Um, well, when I am sick I don't ever go that high. Not to sounds blunt, but that's beginning to push it a bit. Are you on an insulin pump? If you are and you're running that high, you may seriously want to consider changing your infusion set, your insulin, and taking a correction injection. Make sure you're drinking water! And keep eating; even if you aren't hungry, if you don't eat and therefore aren't taking insulin you can develop ketoacidosis. Make sure you are checking for ketones frequently as well. If you aren't on a pump, still make sure you are taking correction injections.
You don't need to be scared about it, just keep an eye on it.
Tell your parents to check you for ketones ASAP and try to drink water or some kind of liquid you are probably dehydrated.
We don't do the ketones my endo doesnt think it matters because when i go back down they will go away. And we have changed the pod 4 times in the past couple of days my mom thought that was why i was so high and i have been taking injections everytime it gets to 500s then it will go back down for a while then go up to around 400 again. But im getting better now and they havent been as high today. But you dont get that high?
Your ENDO doesn't have you check for ketonses?? That doesn't sound like such a good idea to me; even if ketones will go away when you come back down, it is the damage they do while they are there that matters. Remember before you were diagnosed? That was because you were so high from not getting insulin. Thirsty, frequent bathroom breaks, loosing weight, deteriorating muscles... all stuff we don't want to deal with. All stuff that is derived from ketones. It's the ketones actually that do the damage; this is why it is so important that you check for them immiedietley when you're high and treat instantly because this is what does damage to your nerves, organs, etc.
If I were you, I would get a second opinion on that. I really think it's something you should be doing ESPECIALLY when you run that high!
And, no, I don't run that high. 450 has been the worst for me, but that was when I forgot a bolus. Otherwise, my highs are 200's or sometimes 300's. The 5-600's were the range I was in when I was diagnosed. That's enough to get you hospitalized, right there.
Its completely normal for your blood sugar to go up when you're sick. Your body is under a lot of stress at this point. I'm currently suffering through the flu, so my sugars are also high. The best thing to do is drink plenty of water, monitor your sugars closely, and take extra insulin if needed.
