Bradley wears one of two patches on his service dog coat. One patch says, “Please Don’t Pet Me I’m Working” and the other says, “Ask to Pet Me I’m Friendly.” I pick a pacth for him to wear depending on my mood, my schedule, where we are going to be, and the people that we are likely to run into. He usually has the “Please Don’t Pet Me I’m Working Patch,” especially at work, in place. I have found that it really doesn’t matter too much which patch he is wearing, people are drawn to him and can’t help but do a “walk-by” petting. This is a vast generalization because of course there are those that know not to pet a service dog; those that ask prior to petting the dog (always very much appreciated); and then there are those that pet, and then see the patch, and apologize for petting him.
