Effects from swimming

Anyone else out there seem to drop lower from swimming than other forms of exercise?  Must be the random flailing around in the pool or something....I get a 50 like it's nothing, and of course that's with my pump disconnected, too....

  • The same thing happens to me with swimming and I love to swim.  Now I am very nervous about it,  I have a Ping and its suppose to be waterproof.  I keep snack bars by the pool but I feel like I am barely swimming.  How long can you swim for?

  • I was wondering about this too.  My son is 7, Type 1, and was just thinking about getting him into swimming.  I think you exert a lot more energy because you have the force of the water to deal with.  I am a little nervous about putting him into swimming lessons.

    Any more advice or tips?

  • YES.  I think it's because you use almost every muscle when you swim.  I usually swim for 20 minutes before checking again.

  • I always have that feeling like, well, I've taken the pump off, how low could it possibly get, really?  I agree that part of the issue is that in a pool, you're never completely still -- always moving...

I usually will go about an hour before I just get too prunish and feel like leaving the pool!

I swam with the water polo team in college within the first year after being diagnosed, but that was 20 years ago and my body hadn't really settled into its patterns as a diabetic.  Just a shot of NPH in the morning was all I'd need, and practices were in the evening.  So no issues at all with lows.

  • I am so frustrated as I love to swim and I just can't seem to get it right.  Last Saturday I did 10 carbs before swimming and just swam for 15 mins.  Then after ate good size bowl of oatmeal and fruit which I did bolus but then three hours later was at a friends house and fell to my knees with a 50 and dropping.  I don't know anyone else who is Type 1 and swims.  Swimming is my favorite exercise, all I can think of is that I need to eat more carbs before and after???Anyone else have ideas??
