Out of Honeymoon Stage

  • Comments 4

Hi Friends !

Hello my name is Kasmere and I am a senior preparing for college . I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes in March, 2010 . Fortunately , I have been positive and truly grateful to be alive . Recently , I was told I'm out of the honeymoon stage and my body doesn't make any of it's own insulin now . This has caused me to have an underlying sick feeling all the time , awful headaches , and has changed my entire outlook on my condition . I'm trying to stay positive and keep my head up but I really feel defeated . I don't know what to do or who to turn to . I'm now afraid (though still excited) about college and moving away so soon . I have yet to have a year with this condition and before I know it I'll have moved thousands of miles by myself . If any one can give me advice or general help I will be truly grateful :)

  • Kasmer, I'm so sorry - the timing on this could not be worse huh? But you can get a handle on this...! My daughter also gets that 'nauseous' feeling alot - especially when she was coming out of honeymoon period.  Some concrete suggestions:

1-does your college have a good health center? Get in touch with them and ask how/what/ they treat students with Type 1 and if there is a support group on campus - make sure they are open 24/7 - and do they refer Type 1 diabetics to a great doc in the area?  If it all checks out - ask how you can get copies of your medical record transferred to them, or to doc, or to both!

2-You will need fridge in your room for insulin - check their policy and see if they will provide one/if you can't afford one

3-Check what academic policy ie.Type 1 that might help you with better dorm placement/to health center - and class help if needed

4-always wear your Medical ID bracelet and educate your roomate/and friends about Type 1

5-My daughter had nauseous/headaches because she was not eating enough 'small' snacks throughout day - so BG swinging way up/and down - you want to stay level - test often!

good luck! hope this helps! The college people will help you if you speak up and ask! there are no dumb questions ok??

  • Yes , the timing could not be worse ! Thank you for your great ideas , i have yet to think of any of those !

  • Hey Kasmere!! Something just came to my mom's and my attention. When i was in 1st grade i felt nauceous and that was after i had gotten sick!! But when i was first diagnosed i asked my nurses if i could have had been diagnosed 2 years before without even knowing. Even though it wasn't so bad. I felt better when i was diagnosed, as weird as that sounds, its true!! I also haven't had my honeymoon as we know of, so i understand how your feeling right now! It's not fun!! .But i just wanted to say i hope you start feeling better and i hope we can talk soon!!!

  • Thanks so much Maddy , I'm sorry it's taking so long for me to reply , I dont know how to see when people have replied , lol ! But I'm still having the sick feelings , but I feel I am doing a lot better . Thanks for your advice !
