My daughter Traeh has daycare with her dad's parents but they are always making mistakes with her diabetes care. I've tried telling them what they should be doing and they have been lying to me about things too. I'm a single mom and have a serious boyfriend that is willing to learn about everything he would need to know to watch her and to make sure she is well taken care of while I'm at work. Until he learns these things I don't want the grandparents to watch her because I feel I can't trust them. I've given them many chances and it's like they don't want to do what the doctor says, they do what they feel is right. They are putting her live at risk. What can I do? Is there daycare people that can come to my home and take care of her until he learns? How much would it cost? I only have so much money to pay someone. Is there anyone that is certified at low cost or very well experianced.Or is there something else that I can do? Please help!!!!! I want to be able to trust someone in caring for my diabetic daughter while I'm woring. I don't want to worry about her everyday of her live if left with them.
Depending on what daycare is like where you are, there are places that have trained staff to deal with children with chronic illnesses. i would take a look at the daycares in your area and talk to the owners to see if they have had a child with diabetes before.
i was in daycare after i was first diagnosed, and the woman who ran it was my best friend's mom(at the time, we're no longer best friends cuz we grew apart) and she had a bit of experience before so my mom just went through it with her again. I never had a problem(that I can recall or my mom can) while I was in her care after school and whenever I went there for sleepovers. One thing she never did was give me shots, I'd have a snack after school depending on what my blood sugar was but my mom was the only person who gave me shots(and my brother when she asked him too). I'm not sure if you're allowing them to give her shots or not.
But anyways, I'd check out the daycares in your area if you can't trust them and maybe even ask your local JDRF office..they might know of some daycares that have trained staff who can take care of her.
I dont want to seem negative but we live in NJ and when our son was diagnosed last year NO ONE WOULD HELP. Daycares dont take diabetics. At least not around here. We finally found one near my job who was willing to take our son if we came to give him the insulin (she was a type 2). The first time he has a low with a severe reaction, she raised his tuition by $250 per month siting "extra care" as the reason. He never did get that "extra care" but she made a bundle while we went broke. Thank God my son i in public school this year tho that has its own challenges!!
is your daughter on the pump...?
What kinds of things were her grandparents doing or not doing? It is hard to lie about testing BGs because the meter stores them! I had to train my in home daycare provider - but I tried to make it as simple as possible. For instance, my son has the same snacks, meal everyday so that I know the carb amounts. She knows she needs to call me if BG is over 200 to find out what I want her to do and how to treat a low. You can train someone. I was able to train her over 3 days - one morning of going over everything and then coming back the next 2 days at lunch to superviser her doing the BG check and the shot.
One thing that made it a little easier is that she is a T2 diabetic, so she understood somethings. Maybe that is something you could look fo. I would contact your local JDRF for help. Or does your work have an Employee Assistance Program? (if you don't know ask HR). Ofte EAPs will be able to help you search for new daycare and then youcan give them your criteria and they can do at least the initial legwork.
