We are brand new to this.  My daughter Isabelle is 3-1/2 years old and has been diagnosed this weekend.  Any advice for a first time parent working with diabetes?

  • our 4 yr son was only diagnosed last month, so we're pretty new to this as well, this site is great, people with years of knowledge always willing to lend an ear, it took jesse about 2 or 3 weeks to not cry over getting his insulin, the finger pricks he got used to fairly quick, my only suggestion is have lots of toys near by, and my wife thought of a magic cuff idea, just a regular wrist band that "helps ease the pain" or makes there be no pain at all,..that seemed to work well for us...

  • Thanks for the advice.  Isabelle is fine with the finger pricks most of the time.  She really doesn't like the shots very much yet.  She really has no fat to work with, so maybe she feels them more.  The shots during the day are easier then in the evening and at night.  I will have to try the magic cuff idea, we want to get her a pink medical braclet anyway, we could use that!
