My 13yr old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 in February of this year. She cks her blood sugar at least 4 times daily and does her insulin shots at least 4 times daily. School starts in about a month and we have been talking about the pump. She is in Band, Cards & Marching Band. And she feels ashamed or different whenever she goes somewhere for band because they have to make a special stop for her to ck blood sugar and do her shot. Any thoughts or ideas on the pump? Or recommendations on which pump to try first? I know at Camp Hertko Hollow they were showing us some really cool water proof & very small pumps they now have out.
I believe that she will have a much easier time with the pump. She will still have to check her blood sugar, unless you are getting a CGM also. Tell her that she shouldn't feel ashamed at all! I know as a teenager it's tough, but a few years down the road she will realize that it's not really a big deal! Tell her to be proud of who she is...and people will easily get over it! I tried the pump two times and unfortunately they didn't agree with me. I had some really bad site reactions and had to discontinue use of the pump. I am still pretty bitter about it! I say give it a try! She will probably like it sooo much better! Do some research and find one that you think will best fit! They have tubeless ones not too!! Good Luck with your decision!
The pump will be amazing for her. My son is almost 13 and it affords him so much freedom. She will still need to check sugars...probably more than she is now when she starts. It can take awhile sometimes to get the settings right. So she will need to deal with these issues and somewhat of a learning curve as school is just starting. I'm a big fan of any pump, they are all great. But we are a minimed family. User friendly...uber easy to use. Good luck!
the pump is really good for teens. I am 14 and was very active in sports so i got the pump. it helps keep your blood sugars in check and you csn get a certain type of meter so that when you test it goes automatically to your pump
