Type 1 Talk Presenters--Round 2!

  • Comments 11

We are now just days away from JDRF's first ever Type 1 Talk USTREAM broadcast on World Diabetes Day!  As more events are posted on Facebook (66 so far!), topics decided, and presenters announced, I am getting more and more excited for the big day.  I hope that you are too!

Just to throw in a little more excitement for everyone, I'd like to share some NEW additions to our Type 1 Talk speaker line-up.  Here's the full list of everyone who will be joining the discussion this Sunday, 11/14 at 3pm EDT:

  • Dr. Aaron Kowalski, JDRF Assistant Vice President for Treatment Therapies
  • Rachel Steinhardt, JDRF National Director, Marketing & Communications
  • Dr. Richard Insel, JDRF Chief Scientific Officer
  • Kerri Sparling, diabetes blogger, Six Until Me blog
  • Lorraine Stiehl, JDRF Volunteer of the Year & National Chair of Grassroots Advocacy
  • Rik Kirkland, JDRF International Board Member, will serve as the moderator

You'll be able to log on and watch the broadcast by going over to http://www.ustream.tv/channel/jdrf-advocacy.  If you'd like to submit questions for us via USTREAM chat throughout the broadcast, you'll need to sign up for an account with USTREAM.  And remember, it's not too late to organize a little (or large) Type 1 Talk broadcast viewing party.  Head on over to our Facebook application to post your event or search for one in your community today. Questions about the program?  Email us at advocacy@jdrf.org.

So, what do you think of the line-up?  What are you most looking forward to now that the big day is almost here?  Let us know in the comments section below.

  • Looking forward to it, anxious to see where the JDRF Adult T1 Outreach can take us!

  • I hope that one or more of the speakers can come with some ideas on how to make the color BLUE as well known for Diabetes as the color PINK is known for *** Cancer. I suggested having the football teams in the NFL wear something BLUE during their games on Sunday 14 November, World Diabetes Day.

  • I really like the idea of having a signature color associated with diabetes as well as a current recognizable spokesperson.  I am the mom of an almost 20 year old son who was diagnosed with type 1 in November of 1999. Ironically his birthday is November 14th!!! Here's to a cure in this lifetime :-)

  • I'm the mom of a 21 year old son who was diagnosed with Type 1 on March 21, 2010, 62 days before he was to be commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy on his way to flight school and  60 days before he graduated from Cal with high honors. He was dropped from Naval flight school and then dropped from the Navy altogether. He was the Battalion Commanding Officer of his Navy ROTC unit at Cal and was their top midshipman. I want to see the issue of employment discrimination addressed. The specific color idea is good, as society needs to be educated about JDR., and the specific differences between Type 1 and Type 2.

  • I have been a diabetic for 32 yrs. I have had some rocky times. I was placed on the pump in 2004 and it was a GOD send. And now I have the sensor with it and life is great with that. I don't understand the world.  We are discriminated against. We DO NOT have a disability. As long as we keep blood sugars under control, we lead a perfect life just like every other individual. I would just like research to sway our way more. Diabtetes kills many people everyday due to its complications it causes. Something needs to change to help us.

  • The idea of having blue as a identifiable color is a great idea, as well as more education for the public on the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.  I am the grandma of a 6 year who was diagnosed when he was 2.  The pump was a godsend!   Our Walk is this Saturday.

  • I think making blue the color of diabetes is wonderful ! We need to find a way to identify, to the public, the differences btwn Type 1 and Type 2. So many times I watch/listen to newcasts, read articles etc. that talk about diabetes.....they are referring to Type 2 diabetes. The information is good, but only someone educated in diabetes would know that. There needs to be a distinction. I am the mother of a Type 1 diabetic and a daughter of a Type 2 diabetic.....and there is a difference!

  • I think it would be great to have blue as the signature color for Type 1 diabetes.  I would wear it every day for my grandson who was diagnosed a year ago when he was only six.  He's my hero and I pray  that soon someone with a bright mind will come along and discover a cure for this dreaded desease that afflicts so many young people.  Oh, what a great day that will be!

  • Great line up. We are really looking forward to this event, and it takes somthing quite important to over ride foolball on Sunday at the Miller household. Like a room full of Type 1 families cheering for a cure...rather than a touchdown.

  • I have had diabetes since I was 12 years old - almost 40 years now. I  have been wearing a pump for about 8 years. I don't know why I waited so long!!!  It has made an amazing difference in my life. A major advance but we are not done yet!!!!!  We need to find a cure & I hope I am alive to see it. The color blue has always been my favorite, but aside from that ANY color that would  become associated with diabetes would help tremendously with diabetes recognition & support.

  • Thank you so much to everyone involved in making this happen.  I am so excited to be able to learn more about Type 1 diabetes from the experts and to know what is going on now in technology to not only find a cure, but also on better ways to treat it now.  I am also looking forward to hearing how others handle this disease in their lives.  Thank you again,.
