Hope you've been following the buzz JDRF's annual Government Day created for advocating for type 1 diabetes. As many of you already know, annually, JDRF Advocacy volunteers attend Government Day to learn about upcoming legislative efforts and the resources available to them so they can continue to advocate for a cure when they get back to their local communities.
Part of the 2011 Government Day was dedicated to learning about expediting the process to start outpatient trials for the artificial pancreas. As a component of this effort, leaders of the congressional diabetes caucuses sent a letter to their colleagues in the House and Senate, asking them to sign a letter to the Federal Food & Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner. The letter asks that the FDA issue guidance about outpatient trials for the artificial pancreas and continue to play the vital leadership role the agency has played so far. FDA's leadership has allowed for technologies for the artificial pancreas to continue developing for patient use and the next step is to allow these devices to work together and make the management of diabetes easier for millions!
Now, this is where you come in! Below, I have provided some resources to close the loop with you (pun intended ;]) and fill you in on what our volunteers learned a few weeks back. In the coming days, JDRF Advocacy will ask that you contact your representatives and senators to encourage them to sign the letter to the FDA commissioner. Communications from constituents are the most important to legislators and you taking the time to reach out to them will help in making sure they are aware of your need to bring the artificial pancreas to the market, and support the letter to the FDA!
Checkout the links below, they take you to the letters mentioned above and a summary of the guidance for artificial pancreas outpatient trials that has been proposed to the FDA. When you're done, be sure to leave me a comment letting me know if you have any questions.
